For this month’s Logan Center Family Saturday theme of Animation and Imagination, South Side Projections is showcasing a few of the many different ways to make an animated film. From the distant past, we have stop-motion pioneer Wladyslaw Starewicz’s The Frogs Who Wanted a King (1922, 9 min.), Lotte Reiniger’s silhouette film Cinderella (1922, 12 min.), and claymation master Ray Harryhausen’s Little Red Riding Hood (1949, 9 min.). In between will be a trio of more recent films, including Will Rose’s silhouette-like The Goat Herder and His Lots and Lots and Lots of Goats (2012, 7 min.); Robert Castillo’s The Yellow Balloon (2016, 3 min.), which shows Castillo drawing each frame; and Jo Dery’s How Birds Got Their Song (2009, 4 min.), made in collaboration with her Native American students.
